This is not an exhaustive list of resources but ones that we have found useful. Note that you can locate just about any publishing-related topic, or organisation with just a little bit of time spent using an Internet search engine (e.g. google, Yahoo,  MSN etc.)

ISBN Agencies / Registration

www.isbn-international.org/en/international.html Look here to find the appropriate agency for your country/ region who can issue you with ISBNs. Note that they are not issued singly to authors, but in blocks to publishers.  You now have to pay for ISBN allocations.

The Writers Handbook, 2006 (Ed., Barry Turner, MacMillan, ISBN 1-4050-4154-4, £14.99). Large handbook containing many hundreds of pages of useful information for the professional and part-time author alike. Advice, anecdotes, names and addresses of agents, publishers, major UK libraries, magazines, newspapers, societies, prizes etc. This book is truly indispensable.

BRAD Monthly Guide to Advertising Media (EMAP Group, monthly) www.intellagencia.com Business directory with comprehensive listing (over 13,500 entries) of advertising media in the UK: new media, national and regional newspapers, consumer and business press (arranged by sector), television, radio, and outdoor media. see NB Subscription is currently £1200+VAT pcm – so use your local library!

Directory of British Associations  (CBD Research Ltd) www.cbdresearch.com Chancery House, 15 Wickham Road, Beckenham, Kent, BR3 5JS. Tel 0871 222 3440. . NB. There are various directories for the UK & Europe, typical cost £165 – so another trip to the library.

Authors and Publishers Associations

The Society of Authors www.societyofauthors.net Has 7500 authors, you can join if you have published or have been offered a publishing contract. Subscription is £85p.a. (tax deductible!) They provide services and advice for authors. Their website contains lots of useful information. 

The Publishers Association  www.publishers.org.uk – You can join if you want but even if you don’t, there is a lot of useful information to be found here.

The Book Trust www.booktrust.org.uk An independent charitable trust that encourages people to discover the joys of reading. Lists of prizes and projects for children.

American Booksellers Association  www.bookweb.org Looks after the interests of US independent booksellers. Like its UK counterpart, you can obtain mailing lists of its members.

Independent Publishers Guild www.ipg.uk.com A good site for advice, ideas, information and general support for independent publishers. You can become a full member once you have published 3 titles. The IPG, PO Box 93, Royston, SG8 5GH. Tel 01763 247014

Booksellers Association of Great Britain and Ireland www.booksellers.org.uk Trade association representing over 3,900 retail outlets. Members range from large chains to small independent booksellers. The Copyright Licensing Agency www.cla.co.uk Licenses copying, administers, collects  and distributes proceeds for collection of  copyright fees from proceeds of photocopying and other reproductions of authors works. RGAP (Research Group for Artists Publications) www.rgap.co.uk – Useful collective for small publishers. Organisers of the annual Small Publishers Fairs, where you can set up a stand, sell books – and talk to other smaller publishers.

Society of Freelance Editors and Proof Readers www.sfep.org.uk Riverbank House, 1 Putney Bridge Approach, Fulham, London SW6 3JD, Tel 0207 736 3278  Promotes high standards for its members – A safe bet for editing and proof-reading!

The Poetry Library www.poetrylibrary.org.uk. A library of 60,000 poetry titles collected since 1912. Funded by the Arts Council. One of the best websites for poetry resources.

The Society of Authors. www.societyofauthors.net  84 Drayton Gardens, London SW10 9SB, Tel 0207 373 6642. An organisation for professional authors. It currently has over 8000 members. The website has much useful information. To join, you must meet certain eligibility criteria.

The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain www.writersguild.org.uk is the trade union that represents writers in TV, radio, theatre, books, poetry, film and video games; it is recognised as the body for negotiating rights and agreements between authors and broadcasting media – a must visit site if your work is used by radio, television, etc.

The Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS)  www.alcs.co.uk represents the interests of all UK writers and aims to ensure writers are fairly compensated for any works that are copied, broadcast or recorded.

Internet POD Services

Note, there are many print-on-demand services catering for self-publishers to choose from (just type self publishing into google). Many are based in the US, here are just a few that are available in the UK. Remember – read the small print before entering into any agreements!

www.booksurge.com An Amazon.com owned company, service for self-publishers and distributors. Can do Print-on-Demand

www.Lulu.com An American company but now operating in the UK. They will turn your .pdf file into a book of different format and print as few as one at a time. No intitail charges but relatively high unit costs.

www.jem.co.uk  Can handle small production runs and you can use shared mailings.

www.selfpublishing.co.uk (Grosvenor House). Offer a basic publishing package for £495 which includes 5 complimentary copies. After that, additional copies can be purchased for as little as £3.72 per copy (+ post). Other services, such as distribution, is available at extra cost.

www.troubadour.co.uk (Matador Imprint) Established POD, Lots of helpful self-publishing information with good advice. Pre-production costs in the region of £650, then printing costs are variable; typically £400 for 100 copies, £1320 for 500.

www.writersworld.co.uk Another Internet POD services, quotes are tailored to your requirements but a typical service fee is in the region of £1500.

www.thechoirpress.co.uk Well laid out website for self-publishers that provides the option of batch printing and or smaller batches POD. Not the cheapest but has effective cost estimations forms.

www.authorsonline.co.uk UK-based service for publishing e-books and providing POD services. Useful resource site.

www.bluesquirrel.com  ‘Clickbook’ supplier. A ‘virtual printer’ application that enables you to create booklets, do ‘n-up’ printing, brochures etc. regardless of the DTP package. It has printer drivers for most popular printer types. Software can be ordered on-line and downloaded.

www.shops-uk.org.uk Safe Home Ordering Protection Scheme (formally MOPS) Most newspapers now insist on SHOPS rules if you are selling your books directly from an advert.

www.randomhouse.co.uk Random House is one of the world’s biggest publishers. This is a useful site to see how authors’ extracts,  e-books and catalogues are made available.

www.pearsoned.co.uk Pearsons are a major international publishing company that own a number of famous imprints (e.g. SAMS, Que, FT Prentice Hall) particularly in the educational area. A good site to look around.

www.bloomsbury.com Currently famous as the publisher of the Harry Potter books. This blue chip publisher has valuable on-line resources for authors – published and, as yet, unpublished.

www.thebookplace.com A useful site to buy books / browse new and topical information about books and authors. It’s a collaboration between Nielsen’s and Hammicks (as was) bookshops – so they know a thing or two!
